AutoCAD to Tekla Structures: A Transition Guide for Detailers
Moving from AutoCAD 2D steel drawings to Tekla Structures? What carries over, which habits to change, and a practical order for learning the 3D workflow.
You have produced steel drawings in AutoCAD for years. You know how a fabricator reads a single-part drawing, where dimensions should go, and which details cause questions from the shop. Yet more of the advertisements you see now ask for Tekla Structures, and you are wondering how much of your experience carries over, what is genuinely different, and how to make the move without starting from zero.
The good news is that most of what makes you valuable is not software knowledge. The harder part is changing a few habits that 2D work has trained into you.
The core shift: from drawing lines to building the structure
In 2D drafting, the drawing is the product. Each view is drawn separately, and keeping plans, elevations, sections and part drawings consistent is your responsibility.
In a 3D detailing workflow, the model is the product and drawings are generated from it. The detailer builds the project in 3D before producing shop drawings from the model (Wikipedia). Tekla Structures drawings are associative: drawing objects are linked to model objects, so most of them update automatically when the model changes. If a member is resized, dimension points move and dimensions are recalculated (Tekla User Assistance).
Everything else in this guide follows from that one change.
What carries over from your AutoCAD years
Much of your experience transfers directly:
- Reading design drawings. Interpreting GA drawings, sections and connection details is the same skill in any software.
- Fabrication sense. You know what the shop needs, what is practical to weld, and which dimensions matter for fit-up.
- Drawing presentation. Clear dimension strings, sensible views and useful notes still matter. Tekla generates drawings, but someone has to set them up well.
- Checking instinct. Your eye for mistakes is valuable. Interviewers for Tekla roles specifically test quality and checking ability, alongside software skill, fabrication knowledge and BIM awareness (Construction Placements).
- Standards and conventions. Weld symbols, bolt callouts and project specifications do not change because the tool did.
Habits you will need to change
Fix the model, not the drawing
The strongest 2D habit is correcting a drawing directly. In Tekla, if the geometry is wrong, change the model. When the model changes, Tekla Structures notifies you in Document manager that related drawings need updating (Tekla User Assistance). You can freeze drawings to stop associative drawing objects from updating, but the model geometry itself still updates (Freeze drawings). Editing drawings to hide model errors creates problems that surface later in fabrication.
Treat numbering as a model decision
In AutoCAD you assign marks manually. In Tekla, numbering is calculated from the model. Parts are treated as identical and given the same number only if properties such as geometry, profile, material, finish and numbering series match (Tekla User Assistance). Tekla's own guidance recommends planning numbering prefixes and start numbers for the whole project before you start modelling (Plan your numbering series). Coming from manual marks, this is one of the bigger adjustments to make.
Let reports replace manual counting
Counting members and bolts from 2D drawings is slow and error-prone. In Tekla, quantity takeoff means extracting object-specific data from the model to form a report on the physical material required, and reports can be exported to Excel (Trimble User Assistance). Your job shifts from counting to checking that the model, and therefore the report, is correct.
Use clash checking instead of visual overlap checks
In 2D, you catch clashes by comparing views mentally. Tekla's Clash Check Manager finds objects that collide or are too close to each other, within your model and against reference models (Tekla User Assistance).
Remember that the model drives machines
Tekla transforms part length, hole positions, bevels, notches and cuts into coordinates machine tools can use, exported as DSTV-format NC files (Tekla User Assistance). A small modelling shortcut that looked harmless on a 2D sheet can become a wrong hole drilled in the shop.
Using your existing DWG files during the transition
You do not have to abandon your AutoCAD work. Tekla Structures can insert DWG files as reference models to overlay on your own model. It also has a separate DWG/DXF import that brings in construction lines, or lines converted to part profiles, which can be used to build a model (Import DWG or DXF). Set the units in AutoCAD before saving, so the file is scaled correctly when it comes into Tekla (Insert a reference model).
A practical exercise: take a GA from a project you detailed in AutoCAD, bring it in as a reference, and model it in Tekla. You already know the right answer, so you can concentrate on the method.
Where BIM fits in
Tekla models are rarely used in isolation now. Tekla Structures can export models in IFC formats, including a steel fabrication view for detailed steel information, and can upload IFC files directly to Trimble Connect for project collaboration (Export in IFC format). Trimble's 2025 release added a connector that lets detailers submit packages for estimating, purchasing and fabrication to Tekla PowerFab, and previewed a live collaboration service for model-based review (Trimble News). You do not need to master all of this at once, but you should understand that your model may be used by people far beyond the drawing office.
A practical order for learning
- Set up a project with grids, levels and a planned numbering series.
- Model the primary members of a structure you already know well.
- Add secondary members and a few typical connections.
- Run numbering and understand every unexpected result.
- Generate GA, assembly and single-part drawings, and compare them with your old AutoCAD versions.
- Change a member in the model and watch how the drawings respond.
- Produce a material report and reconcile it with a manual BOM.
- Run a clash check and fix what it finds.
Trimble's free Basic Steel Fundamentals eLearning course, with a modelling assignment and test, is a reasonable place to start before structured training (Trimble training).
Presenting the upgrade to employers
Once you can work in Tekla, the way you describe the change matters. Avoid listing "AutoCAD, Tekla" as two equal lines on a CV. Instead, show that you understand both workflows and why the second is different.
- Show before and after. A portfolio page placing an AutoCAD single-part drawing you produced next to the Tekla drawing generated from your own model makes the transition visible. An interview guide on an Indian job portal recommends a PDF portfolio of models, shop drawings and erection drawings, using de-identified images where project data is confidential (Construction Placements).
- Talk about checking, not just modelling. Explain how you verify numbering, reports and drawings. This is where years of 2D experience become an advantage over a fresher who only knows the software.
- Be ready for BIM questions. Know what IFC is, why a fabricator might want a model rather than drawings, and how your model would be shared.
Key takeaways
- Your fabrication knowledge and checking eye are the most valuable things you bring.
- In Tekla the model is the product; drawings follow it.
- Fix errors in the model, plan numbering early, and trust reports only after checking the model.
- Use your old DWG files as references while you learn.
- Understand where your model goes next: IFC, collaboration platforms and fabrication software.
Learning with STEEL
STEEL is a Tekla Authorized Training Centre. Its current course, PEB Steel Detailing & Tekla Structures, is designed for beginners, so an experienced AutoCAD draughtsman will find early topics familiar. The larger share of the programme, however, is practical Tekla work: modelling primary and secondary members, connections, numbering, drawings, BOM and reports, NC/DSTV workflow concepts and model QA/QC. Tekla modelling alone carries 30% of the assessment. Students sit the Tekla Certification Exam as part of the course; read more on the certification page.
If you want to judge whether it matches your level first, the free Steel Detailing Masterclass is available on demand.
