From Steel Detailer to Checker and Lead: How to Move Up

What separates detailers promoted to checker, lead or estimator from those who stay modelling: the skills, checking habits and credentials that matter.

You have been modelling and detailing steel for several years. You are fast, your drawings go out on time, and juniors come to you with questions. But the checker and lead roles seem to go to someone else, or they simply do not open up. So the real question is: what do the people who move up do differently, and how do you show you are ready?

In most detailing teams, promotion is not a reward for speed. It follows responsibility. People move up when they are trusted to catch other people's mistakes, make decisions the team relies on, and explain their reasoning clearly.

Why the checker role exists

Shop drawings are normally checked for accuracy and completeness by another detailer, the checker (Wikipedia). One checking guide explains why this matters so much: steel shop drawings cannot be interpreted the way working drawings are, because they are specialised, precise instructions to the fabricator (Structural Drafter).

Approval by the design engineer does not remove that burden. Under American practice set out in AISC 303, the Code of Standard Practice (AISC), approval of shop drawings does not transfer responsibility for their accuracy back to the engineer of record. The fabricator and detailer remain responsible for dimensional accuracy and fit-up (Panache Engineering). The checker is the last line of defence inside the detailing team, and companies promote people they trust in that position.

What checkers actually check

The same checking guide sets three priorities: design compliance, geometric accuracy and buildability. It suggests starting with basic datums such as bay spacing, span and roof pitch before looking at details. Its checklist covers title blocks, dimension completeness, member sizes, connection compliance, adherence to specifications, whether pieces can be shipped, bill of material accuracy and coordination with other trades (Structural Drafter).

Another workflow guide lists the kinds of errors internal checking is meant to catch, including hole patterns rotated 180 degrees on symmetric pieces and bolt grades that do not match between erection and single-part drawings (Panache Engineering).

Notice that very few of these are software problems. They are engineering, fabrication and coordination problems. That is the gap between a good modeller and a good checker.

Skills to build before you ask for the role

Read the contract drawings like the design engineer

Before you check anyone else's work, you need to know what the design actually requires. Practise reading the structural drawings and specifications independently, then compare your understanding with the model. When information is missing or conflicting, write clear RFIs rather than guessing. AISC offers the current Code of Standard Practice as a free download, and reading it is a good way to understand who is responsible for what, especially if you work on US projects (AISC).

Learn how steel is actually built

Being able to walk the shop floor and see how things are built gives a detailer a major advantage (ESD-S). If you have never visited the fabrication shop or erection site for your own projects, ask to. Buildability is one of the three things a checker is expected to judge, and it is learned by seeing mistakes in steel, not on screen.

Use model-level checking tools properly

A modern checker checks the model as well as the drawings. In Tekla Structures, Clash Check Manager finds objects that collide or are too close, and clash results can be prioritised, grouped and commented on (Tekla User Assistance). Build your own routine for numbering checks, clash checks and report reconciliation, and document it.

Give feedback people can act on

Finding errors is half the job. The other half is communicating them so they get fixed without friction. The Structural Drafter guide describes a markup method: the checker marks agreement and disagreement in different colours, the detailer responds to each mark, and the two discuss disagreements until they are resolved before the checker signs off (Structural Drafter). Whatever system your company uses, the principle is the same: clear marks, a response to every comment, and a record of what was agreed.

Other routes up

Checking is not the only direction. Detailing experience leads naturally into several roles:

  • Lead or project coordinator. You manage schedules, RFIs and coordination with fabricators. Trimble's 2025 release, for example, added a connector for submitting packages from Tekla Structures to Tekla PowerFab for estimating, purchasing and fabrication (Trimble News). Leads need to understand how these handovers work.
  • Estimator or quantity take-off engineer. Quantity takeoff extracts material data from the model. Trimble notes that it is not the estimate itself; it provides the material data an estimate is built from (Trimble User Assistance). Detailers who understand model accuracy make reliable estimators.
  • BIM coordinator or manager. One Indian job portal describes a typical progression from junior detailer to Tekla modeller, senior detailer or checker, team lead or project coordinator, and eventually BIM manager (Construction Placements). The timelines vary widely between companies, but the sequence is a useful map.

Do credentials help?

If you work on North American projects, the National Institute of Steel Detailing's Individual Detailer Certification is worth knowing about. It has a Detailer classification, requiring five years of detailing experience or three years plus a completed training programme, and a Senior Detailer classification, requiring ten years of detailing plus some checking experience. The exam is open book and taken online, and certification must be renewed every three years (NISD). NISD describes it as available worldwide, with the exam grounded in the AISC Steel Construction Manual (STRUCTURE magazine).

Credentials support a promotion case, but in most teams the stronger evidence is a record of catching problems before they reached the shop.

Sharing what you know

The NISD overview makes an observation that should interest every senior detailer: many steel detailers have been self-taught and mentored by other self-taught detailers, which has made industry standards inconsistent (STRUCTURE magazine). Experienced people who teach deliberately help fix that.

Teaching also builds your own promotion case. Some practical ways to start:

  • Write a checking checklist for your team's most common project type.
  • Run short internal sessions on errors you have seen reach the shop.
  • Build and document custom components for repeated connections. Trimble's advanced Tekla training covers custom components (Trimble training).
  • Review a junior's drawings with them, not just for them.

When a manager can see that your knowledge makes other people better, the case for a lead role becomes much easier to make.

Making the case to your manager

Asking for a checker or lead role works better with evidence than with years of service. Over your next few projects, keep a simple record:

  • Errors you caught in your own or others' work before release, and what each could have cost in the shop or on site
  • RFIs you raised that prevented rework
  • Checklists, templates or components you created that the team now uses
  • Juniors you helped, and what improved in their work

Then ask for a trial: checking one package under supervision. It gives your manager a low-risk way to see how you work, and it gives you honest feedback on what you still need to learn.
