Core or IT After Civil or Mechanical Engineering: How to Decide

Torn between a core job and IT after civil or mechanical engineering? A practical, data-backed way to decide, with five questions to ask yourself first.

If you studied civil or mechanical engineering, you have probably heard some version of this at home, in the hostel or at a relative's wedding: "Core jobs pay less. Just take an IT job." Some of your batchmates may already have done exactly that. And you may be sitting with an IT offer, or with no offer at all, wondering whether four years of structures, machines and drawings should count for something.

The real question is not "Is core better than IT?" There is no single answer to that. The real question is: which path makes sense for you, given your interests, your family's finances and the kind of work you want to be doing three years from now? This post gives you a way to answer that honestly.

What the numbers say, and what they do not

It helps to start with facts rather than hostel rumours.

The India Skills Report 2026, released by ETS with CII, AICTE, AIU and Taggd, found employability of 80% for computer science graduates and 78% for IT graduates, compared with 70.15% for engineering graduates overall. The same coverage notes that traditional engineering domains face "rising specialisation demands".

Two things are worth noticing. First, the report measures employability through assessments, not through job offers. Second, "rising specialisation demands" is a clue. Core employers are not short of people with degrees. They are short of people who can do a specific task well from the first few weeks.

Meanwhile, finding work after graduation is hard across the board. The Periodic Labour Force Survey for 2025 put unemployment among graduates at 11.2%, more than three times the national rate of 3.1%. An analysis of the 2023-24 survey by Data For India found that more than a third of graduates in their early twenties were unemployed.

So neither path is a guaranteed shortcut. An IT offer is not safe simply because it is IT, and a core career is not closed simply because the first few months are slow.

Core engineering is bigger than PSUs and GATE

When people say "core job", they often picture one of two things: a PSU job through GATE, or a site job with long hours somewhere remote. Both are real options, but the core sector is much wider than that.

Consider steel construction alone. Before a factory, warehouse or industrial shed goes up, someone designs it. Someone turns that design into exact fabrication drawings for every beam, plate and bolt. Someone estimates quantities and cost. Someone plans production in the fabrication shop, and someone manages erection at site. Each of those is a job, and several of them are done in an office, on a computer.

There are also signs of long-term demand:

  • Public capital expenditure in the Union Budget was raised to ₹12.2 lakh crore for 2026-27.
  • The National Steel Policy 2017 set targets of 300 million tonnes of crude steel capacity and 158 kg of finished steel consumption per person by 2030-31, up from about 61 kg when the policy was approved. Infrastructure and housing are among the major segments it names.
  • Research firm IMARC estimates India's pre-engineered building (PEB) market at USD 2.26 billion in 2025 and projects growth of about 12% a year to 2034. Different research firms publish different estimates, so treat any single number as a sign of direction rather than a promise.

None of this means jobs will arrive automatically. It means there is real work in the core sector for people with the right, specific skills.

An honest side-by-side

Salaries vary too much by company, city and individual to compare usefully in a blog post. It is more helpful to compare what each path asks of you.

Neither column is better. They suit different people.

Five questions to ask yourself before deciding

1. What did you actually enjoy in college?

Think about projects, labs and internships, not marks. If you enjoyed engineering drawing, understanding how a structure carries load or visiting a site, that matters. If the elective you enjoyed most was programming, that matters too.

2. Are you choosing IT for the work, or because it was the first offer?

There is nothing wrong with taking an IT job. But if you are choosing it only because it is the easiest next step, ask yourself whether you will still want to do that work in three years.

3. Can your degree become an advantage instead of a sunk cost?

In IT, a civil or mechanical graduate competes with computer science graduates on their home ground. In core roles, your subject knowledge is part of what you offer an employer.

4. How long can you afford to build a skill?

Be honest about money at home. A focused skill course of a few months is a very different commitment from a two-year master's degree or several attempts at a competitive exam. Talk about this openly with your family.

5. What does year three look like?

Picture yourself three years from now. What would you like to be able to do that you cannot do today? Work backwards from that answer.

Avoid the most common mistake: drifting

Many graduates never really choose between core and IT. They drift. They apply everywhere, wait for results, prepare half-heartedly for an exam, and six months pass without a clear direction.

A better approach is to run a short, deliberate test. Pick one direction and give it 60 to 90 days of serious effort. If you lean towards core, for example:

  • Try a free introduction to industry software. Tekla lists free eLearning courses, including a Steel Fundamentals learning path.
  • Practise reading real structural or fabrication drawings.
  • Read 20 job listings for roles such as "Tekla Modeler" or "Steel Estimator", and write down the skills that keep appearing.
  • Speak to one or two people who do that job today.

At the end, you will know far more than you do now, and your decision will rest on evidence rather than on what a cousin said.

If you choose core, make yourself easy to hire

Core employers want proof that you can contribute quickly. That usually means:

  • One or two tools learnt properly, rather than ten learnt on the surface.
  • A portfolio: drawings, models or a complete project you can open and explain in an interview.
  • A recognised certificate, where one exists for the software you use.
  • Interview readiness: explaining your work in simple, clear language.
