What a Steel Detailer Does, and How to Become One in India

What does a steel or Tekla detailer actually do? A plain guide to the daily work, PEB basics, who suits the role and how Indian freshers can start.

If you have searched for jobs after civil or mechanical engineering, you have probably seen titles like "Tekla Modeler", "Structural Steel Detailer" or "PEB Detailer". They sound technical, but job listings rarely explain what the work looks like. Is it real engineering or just drafting? Can a fresher get in? What should you learn first?

This guide answers those questions plainly, including the parts that course brochures usually skip.

What steel detailing is

A steel building starts with a structural engineer's design. The design sets out member sizes, how the frame will carry loads and what each connection must achieve. But a fabrication workshop cannot cut and weld steel directly from a design drawing.

That is where the steel detailer comes in. A widely used definition describes a steel detailer as a person who "produces detailed drawings for steel fabricators and steel erectors". Detailers produce two main kinds of drawings:

  • Shop (fabrication) drawings, which give the exact requirements for making each member: dimensions, material, holes, welds and finishes.
  • Erection drawings, which show the site team where each fabricated piece goes and how it is fixed.

These drawings are normally reviewed by the engineer or architect before they are released to the fabricator. So the detailer is not the designer. The detailer is the person who makes the design buildable, piece by piece.

Where PEB fits in

A pre-engineered building (PEB) is a steel building whose parts are engineered and manufactured in a factory, then bolted together at site. You see them as factories, warehouses, logistics parks and industrial sheds.

A typical PEB has:

  • Primary members: the main frames, usually columns and rafters made from built-up I-sections, which carry the building's loads down to the foundation.
  • Secondary members: lighter, usually cold-formed members such as purlins (supporting the roof sheeting), girts (supporting the wall cladding) and eave struts.
  • Bracing, connections, sheeting and accessories that tie everything together.

Because PEB parts are made in a factory and assembled quickly, accuracy in detailing matters a great deal. A hole in the wrong place is usually discovered at site, where fixing it is slow and expensive.

What the work involves day to day

Modern detailing is done in 3D. Trimble describes Tekla Structures as "3D BIM software for modelling structures", used by engineers, detailers, fabricators and contractors. From one model it can produce fabrication drawings, general arrangement drawings, assembly drawings and NC files for CNC machines. Trimble's steel detailing page also highlights "accurate production data for workshop CNC machinery".

In practice, a junior detailer's work usually includes:

  1. Reading the design drawings and understanding how the structure works.
  2. Modelling primary and secondary members in the software.
  3. Adding connections: bolts, plates and welds.
  4. Numbering parts and assemblies so every piece can be tracked through the shop and site.
  5. Creating drawings: general arrangement (GA), assembly and single-part drawings.
  6. Producing reports such as bills of materials (BOM), which purchase and production teams rely on.
  7. Checking the model and drawings for clashes, missing parts and errors before anything reaches the shop floor.

Much of the job is careful problem-solving. Why does this connection not fit? Does this dimension match the design? What will the fabricator need to know to make this part correctly the first time?

Is it a real career?

This is a fair question, and it deserves a straight answer.

The skill is real and specific. Detailing sits between design and fabrication, and steel structures need it. It uses your engineering knowledge of loads, materials and drawings directly.

Demand is tied to construction and manufacturing. Public capital expenditure was set at ₹12.2 lakh crore for 2026-27, and the National Steel Policy 2017 targets a large rise in steel consumption by 2030-31. Research firm IMARC estimates the Indian PEB market at USD 2.26 billion in 2025, with industrial buildings the largest segment. Estimates differ between firms, so read them as a sign of direction, not a guarantee of jobs.

There is room to grow. Detailing experience can lead to roles such as senior detailer, steel estimator, quantity take-off engineer, fabrication or production engineer, project engineer and BIM coordinator. Model-based skills also carry over into wider BIM work.

We will not quote you a salary. Pay depends on the company, the city, the projects and your skill level. Online salary pages are often built from a handful of self-reported entries. One national Tekla detailer salary page we checked in 2026 was based on just 10 reported salaries. Compare several sources and ask people who work in the industry.

Who tends to do well

The skills commonly associated with detailers include drafting, geometry and trigonometry, spatial visualisation and an understanding of fabrication methods. In everyday terms, you will probably enjoy detailing if you:

  • like seeing how things fit together,
  • can concentrate for long stretches on a screen,
  • notice small errors that others miss,
  • would rather get something exactly right than roughly done.

Your branch matters less than you might think. Civil and structural graduates bring knowledge of how structures behave. Mechanical graduates and diploma engineers often bring a strong feel for drawings, fabrication and manufacturing.

How to become a steel detailer: a practical path

Step 1: Test your interest for free

Before spending money, try the work. Tekla offers free eLearning courses, including a Steel Fundamentals learning path. Even a few hours will show you whether you enjoy working this way.

Step 2: Get comfortable reading drawings

Find sample structural and fabrication drawings and practise reading them: grid lines, plans, sections, elevations and member marks. Everything else builds on this.

Step 3: Learn the tools in a structured way

Most roles expect AutoCAD and a 3D detailing tool such as Tekla Structures, along with basic Excel for reports and quantities. Self-study is possible, but structured training with real project work and regular feedback usually gets you job-ready faster.

Step 4: Earn a recognised certificate

A certificate issued by the software maker after an exam gives employers an independent signal of your skill. Whenever a certificate is offered, check who issues it.

Step 5: Build a portfolio

Complete at least one full project: model, connections, drawings and BOM. In an interview, opening your own model and explaining your decisions is often more convincing than a mark sheet.

Step 6: Prepare for a practical interview

Detailing interviews often include technical questions and sometimes a short practical task. Practise explaining your work clearly and calmly.
