Steel Detailing Jobs for Freshers in India: How to Get Hired
What PEB and steel detailing employers in India look for in freshers, how to build proof of skill with no experience, and how to prepare for interviews.
You have your diploma or degree in civil or mechanical engineering. You have applied for detailing jobs, and almost every advertisement asks for two or three years of experience. So the question you are really asking is simple: how do you get the first job when every job wants proof that you have already done one?
The honest answer is that "experience" in a detailing advertisement is usually shorthand for something more specific. Employers want to know that you can produce a model and drawings that a fabrication shop can use without someone redoing your work. You cannot fake years, but you can show that ability. This post explains how.
What detailing employers are actually hiring for
A structural steel detailer creates 3D models, fabrication drawings and erection plans that are used to manufacture and install steel structures. Typical outputs include shop drawings with exact member dimensions, hole and cut locations, bolt and weld specifications, and bills of material, along with erection drawings and CNC files (Mold-Tek Engineering).
Look closely at a real Indian advertisement and the pattern becomes clear. One listing for a Tekla Modeler & Detailer in the PEB industry in Coimbatore asks for a Diploma, BE or B.Tech in Civil and "2+ years of experience in Tekla Modeling & Detailing for PEB Industry". In the same listing it says "Freshers with strong Tekla training can be considered" (SimplyHired India listing). The responsibilities it lists are concrete: 3D models and fabrication drawings in Tekla, GA drawings, anchor bolt plans, erection documents, BOM, CNC data and cutting lists, with awareness of IS 800, MBMA, AISC and AWS.
The lesson: read the responsibilities, not just the experience line. If you can show you have done each of those tasks on a realistic project, you are in the group the employer is willing to consider.
The four things interviewers test
An interview guide for Tekla roles on an Indian construction job portal says interviewers usually test four areas (Construction Placements):
- Software proficiency: can you navigate, model and produce deliverables efficiently?
- Industry knowledge: do you understand how steel is fabricated and erected?
- Quality and checking: can you verify your own model and drawings?
- BIM awareness: do you understand where Tekla fits in a wider project?
Most freshers prepare only for the first. The other three are where you can stand out, because they show you think like someone who has worked alongside a fabrication shop.
How to build proof without a job
Learn the engineering, not just the buttons
Software skill without structural understanding shows up quickly in an interview. For PEB work, you should be able to explain the building system in plain words: primary frames, secondary members such as purlins and girts, and the roof and wall sheeting they support. PEB members are often a combination of hot-rolled sections, cold-formed members and built-up tapered sections (CE&CR).
The same article makes a point worth remembering: many structural engineers in India come from an RCC design background and are less familiar with steel. If you can talk confidently about steel members, connections and fabrication, you already bring something many applicants do not.
Get hands-on time with real software
If you are still enrolled in an accredited institution, Trimble offers a free Tekla Student subscription for non-commercial learning, including Tekla Structures (Tekla for Students). It is valid for 365 days from activation, models saved with it cannot be opened in commercial versions, and commercial work is prohibited (Tekla Campus instructions).
Trimble also lists a free Basic Steel Fundamentals eLearning course with a modelling assignment and a test (Trimble training). These are good ways to find out whether you enjoy the work before you commit time and money to formal training.
Build a small, complete portfolio
The same interview guide recommends preparing a PDF portfolio with screenshots of your best Tekla models, shop drawings and erection drawings (Construction Placements). One complete project is worth more than ten disconnected screenshots. A simple PEB shed works well if it includes:
- A clear 3D model with main frames, purlins, girts and bracing
- At least a few typical connections, such as base plates and rafter splices
- A general arrangement (GA) drawing and an anchor bolt plan
- Assembly drawings and single-part drawings for a few members
- A bill of materials exported from the model
- A short note on what you checked and what you corrected
That last point matters. It speaks directly to the "quality and checking" area interviewers test.
Understand numbering, because interviewers ask
Numbering is where many beginners get caught. In Tekla Structures, parts are treated as identical and given the same number only when properties such as geometry, profile, material, finish and numbering series match (Tekla User Assistance). If you can explain why two beams that look the same received different numbers in your model, you show the kind of understanding that saves a fabrication shop from errors.
Does a certificate help?
Yes, but be clear about what it proves. A certificate shows you have completed training or passed an exam to a defined standard. A portfolio shows you can produce usable work. An interview shows you understand why the work is done the way it is. Employers look at all three, and a certificate is strongest when it sits alongside a project you can explain.
Applying well
- Target the right employers: PEB manufacturers, steel fabricators and detailing service firms all hire detailers and modelers.
- Rewrite your CV around deliverables: "Modelled a single-span PEB shed in Tekla; produced GA, assembly and single-part drawings and BOM" says far more than "Knowledge of Tekla".
- Match the advertisement's words: if it says GA drawings, anchor bolt plans and CNC data, use those words where they truthfully describe your work.
- Keep expectations grounded: pay and responsibility vary widely between employers and cities, so treat your first role as an entry-level start. Growth comes from what you can do after the first year.
Preparing for the interview
Expect basic questions first: what Tekla Structures is, the difference between a part and an assembly, what a grid is used for (Construction Placements). Then expect questions about your project. Practise answering these aloud:
- Why did you choose that connection type?
- How did you set up numbering, and what went wrong at first?
- How did you check the drawings before you called them finished?
- What would a fabricator need from your drawings that a designer might not?
